EL Education
For Literacy instruction, first grade students participate in three I-hour blocks of learning each day. They are the Module, the Labs, and the Reading Foundations Skills Block.
The Module...
In the K-2 curriculum, there are four modules over the course of a school year. In K-2, Module 1 is a bit shorter (six weeks rather than eight), so that teachers have time to do the other important work of getting classroom routines and culture in place, which often takes more time and deliberate attention for primary-aged students. Each module has a consistent structure of three units, each of which includes one formal assessment, that primarily assesses either reading, writing or speaking and listening. Module 3 and 4 have a similar compelling topic allowing students to dig deeper into the topic and connect to their community (contributing to a better world). These are the Module topics we cover is first grade...
Module 1 - Tools and Work
Module 2 - A Study of the Sun, Moon, and Stars
Module 3 - Birds' Amazing Bodies
Module 4 - Caring for Birds
The Labs...
The K-2 Labs support and extend student learning from the Module Lessons. They are designed to help teachers ensure that all of their students get the time to play and explore, become immersed in oral language and content knowledge, and practice skills and habits of character that they need—both to live joyfully and to be fully successful and proficient.
The Skills Block...
All structured phonics programs are based on the Alphabetic Principle, which means, in a nutshell, that there are systematic and predictable relationships between letters and sounds. Reading and spelling (or decoding and encoding) are taught together because of the strong reciprocal relationship between written letters and the sounds they make when spoken.
