Meet OREO...Our Class Pet!
To start the school year, our class reads The World According to Humphrey by: Betty G. Birney. This story is a fun hamster's-eye view of a classroom and gives our class something to look forward to...earning a class pet of our own. When our class earns 30 warm fuzzies as a group, we get to welcome our furry friend to join us in our class science center.
Currently our class pet is Oreo who loves apple treats, running around the classroom in her ball, and of course sleeping in her hut. One of our class jobs is the "Pet Keeper" who makes sure Oreo has fresh water and food as well as lots of treats.
Oreo helps us remember the importance of using our inside voices, the fun of exploring new things, and the excitement of completing challenging tasks. As Humphrey explains...
"You can learn a lot about life by observing another species.
That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy is it true!
There are always adventures in the classroom and each weekend he gets to sleep over with a different student, like Lower-Your-Voice-
A.J. and Speak-Up Sayeh. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course), and much more. With a
lock-that-doesn't-lock and an adventurous spirit, Humphrey's life would be perfect if only the teacher, Mrs. Brisbane, wasn't out to get
him? With a fresh voice and an engaging, hamster's-eye view of school, families, and treats to hide in a cheek pouch, Betty G. Birney's
Humphrey will elicit laughter and a new appreciation for classroom hamsters everywhere."
